By Degrees…
If you are one of my dear friends whose e-mail lies, apparently unnoticed, in my Inbox right now, this message is for you. You are not alone. And neither are you forgotten. Although it may come as only a modest consolation, I do feel a measure of guilt for each e-mail that I do not respond to immediately. This amount is increased for e-mails from friends (good e-mails), further increased by e-mails addressed only to me (really good e-mails), and tips the scales when I’ve been such a berk that over a month has passed since you first contacted me (what a schmuck).
The only insult I intend to add to these injuries is to let you know that I’ve recently been dealing with some Heavy School-Related $#!t and that I soon hope to be on the sweet, downhill side of that obnoxious wave—at which point I fully intend to stop blogging and write you properly. A phone call or two will almost certainly be in order in some cases. I know my responsibilities, even if I don’t always attend to them.
Once I’ve cleared my Inbox, and my conscience, I’ll be updating DR with some tales from graduate school, for your general edification (something I can only do, it would seem, by degrees… ha, ha). Thanks for bearing with me! Knowing you are all out there—somewhere, over the optical fibres—gives me more comfort than a warm glass of milk and a nap after lunch ever did.
ACO,
Don’t sweat it at all. Interesting people are too busy to write a lot of emails and other interesting people understand this. Only losers monitor their friend’s email strike rate.

The use of ‘$#!t’ and its ilk has always puzzled me, especially when it is used to avoid offence, rather than censorship. The addage ‘A rose by any other name..” seems to apply. If a term is used to avoid offending any member of the target audience, then why not use an alternate word that does not represent or imply any offensive meaning? Perhaps the word ‘Stuff’ may have been a good word to use since the target market of this peice is clearly the Christian Right and Republicans.
Or, to prevent further public diatribes, you could just do the Honourable Thing and reply to your emails. Or not. Yes, I am attempting to bribe you into correspondence…

I mostly just liked the way the $ looked like an ‘S’ and how the # kind of resembles an ‘H’ and of course that ! resembles nothing other than an upside down ‘i’. I guess the other thing is that I’d like to save the expletive for the shit that really deserves it.
