Old School is an excellent post by Mark Pilgrim about changing representations of class in Sesame Street. The short New York Times article that Pilgrim references in his post, Sweeping the Clouds Away, is also worth a read. I did catch a few minutes of Sesame Street recently and the show seemed unrecognisable. Funny that the version I grew up on in the late 70s, in the leafy western suburbs of Brisbane, is now the perfect contrast for a case study in gentrification. I couldn’t agree more with Pilgrim. Class is the most unspeakable topic in American public discourse.
